Features the works of nine photographers and video artists on the cutting edge of the Cuban art scene.
This illustrated exhibition catalogue includes the work of nine photographers and video artists who are on the cutting edge of the Cuban art scene: Tania Bruguera, Raúl Cordero, Carlos Garaicoa, Luis Gómez, Ernesto Leal, Elsa Mora, René Peña, Manuel Piña, and Sandra Ramos. Although their images reflect very specific experiences, this specificity infuses their work with universal relevance, dramatizing how art can, through images that are both poetic and provocative, address universal issues of personal identity, dislocation, and place. Also included are essays by guest curator Helaine Posner and art critic Eugenio Valdés Figueroa that examine each of the featured artist’s works.
Helaine Posner is adjunct curator at the American Federation of Arts. Eugenio Valdés Figueroa is a curator, critic, and art historian. He is an editorial advisor to the magazine Atlantica and a member of the curating committee of Fundacíon Ludwig in Havana, Cuba, where he lives and works.
