Iran: A Revolution in Turmoil is the first book about the Iranian revolution written entirely by Iranians. Insightful and authoritative, this collection brings together the viewpoints of academics and civil servants as they discuss the political, social, and economic causes of the Iranian revolution and the subsequent successes and failures of the Islamic government.

The book examines the development process in Iran, including a critique of the Shah's policies and their effect on oil, agriculture, and the tribal and urban populations. The selections also focus on the government's use of the army against the revolutionary forces, and on the Iranian guerilla movement. Iran: A Revolution in Turmoil contains the first English translation of several speeches by Ayatollah Motahari, which formed the theoretical framework of the Islamic revolution.

While the articles in the book are specifically concerned with Iran, their conclusions are important to all third world countries, along with those institutions concerned with economic growth and political stability.
